This band recorded two albums of lush, instrumental progressive rock fronted by keyboards and violin. Both contain long tracks and feature nice cover art.
1 | REGRESSOAS ORIGENS | 1976 | METRO SOM |
2 | PRIVADO | 1977 | METRO SOM |
An ultra-rare album which contains very long avant-garde tracks featuring synthesizers, piano, guitar, bass and percussion. Barreto later played with the Frenchman Jaques Berrocal.
1 | ANAR BAND | 1977 | PRIVATE PRESS |
This outfit started as a folk-rock band but gradually turned towards rock.
1 | CONTOS DA BARBEARIA | 1978 | EMI |
2 | NO JARDIN DA CELESTE | 1980 | VC |
3 | TAMBEM EU | 1982 | ? |
4 | COM TI CHITAS | 1984 | ? |
This is a large-scale concept album typical of late 70's symphonic rock. It reminds me of some Eloy albums from this period, and is probably the most legendary Portugese album.
1 | 10.000 ANOS DEPOIS ENTRE VENUS E MARTE | 1978 | ORFEU FPAT 6001 |
A folk singer whose quiet album features predominantly songs with acoustic guitar only. However, the 7-minute title track is more experimental with synthesizers and tape loops.
1 | MEMORIA | 1978 | ZAFIRO ZL 225 |
A very rare album of Portugese heavy progressive music featuring a talented guitarist named F. Nascimento. Organ, moog, piano and sax provide some instrumental variety. The lyrics are in English.
1 | ARTE & OFICIO | 1979 | ORFEU |
His album contained folk-rock (more folk than rock) dominated by guitars, violin and keyboards.
1 | PANO-CRU | 1978 | ORFEU |
A recently re-discovered album of complex progressive rock with strong folk influences.
1 | JORGE PALMA | 1975 | DECCA |
Although largely unknown, this band's album is a minor masterpiece with elaborate progressive rock tracks. Its six tracks are serious, moody and atmospheric, featuring sound effects such as seagulls and blowing winds. Some parts sound similar to Genesis and late seventies Italian outfits such as Apoteosi and Zauber.
1 | ASCENCAO E QUEDA | 1978 | DECCA |
Saga played nice mid-seventies progressive rock inspired by Caravan, Camel and even Magma. Their album contains the whole instrumental spectrum of piano, organ, synthesizers, guitar, sax, and sudden jazzy time shifts by the rhythm section. There are also male/female vocals and full choral sections.
1 | HOMO SAPIENS | 1976 | MOVIEPLAY |
Tantra is the only Portugese progressive rock group fairly well-known among collectors. Their debut album Mistérios E Maravilhas (1977) was an ambitious attempt to create an original style using strong influences of Genesis, Camel, Yes and Pink Floyd. It wasn't fully convincing, although the album has its moments. Holocausto (1978) was a clear improvement that will please people in search of a more exotic version of Eloy.
